Preparation

Drug Education

SFA uses the same drug education components for each stakeholder presentation in every district. This makes using SFA “substances” materials easy in your sports community.

Policy

There are some generic aspects to district/school policies as well as coaching practices around policy. Materials below explain these conceptually and may be useful, but SFA prefers to evaluate your specific school district’s policy around drugs and alcohol relative to Athletics. SFA staff will build a presentation module from this information specifically for your district’s use, for a fee.

Program Introduction Video

This video explanation (8:20) introduces SFA and provides a program overview. Presentations to parents and coaches include this overview. Presentations to athletes include it in part.

Presentations

Online

Zoom meetings facilitated by SFA staff can be scheduled with each stakeholder group for a nominal fee.

In-Person

For more robust information transfer, Q&A and next steps planning, SFA staff will travel to your facility to conduct stakeholder presentations in-person. The athletic organization pre-schedules and promotes the event(s). To optimize time, all stakeholder meetings can take place in one afternoon/evening or over a couple of days.  Travel expenses are required.

Train the Trainer

If there is a parent, coach, administrator or wellness professional in the school or district interested in facilitating the SFA program, we can train them for a nominal fee, which includes all ongoing support following the training and as the facilitator delivers SFA.

Policy & Influence discussion for Coaches (4:30)

SFA dives a little deeper into policy with coaches because a) policies that give coaches certain latitudes in discipline need some discussion and planning prior to explanation for parents and athletes, and b) unique aspects of coach’s influence warrant discussion.

Meeting Handouts

Surveys

SFA places great importance on evaluating the effectiveness of its program and where improvements can be made.  Currently SFA uses a pre and post survey with each stakeholder group to evaluate changes in knowledge and understanding. In general we find:

Athletes – experience the greatest gains in understanding the effects of substances. Although the details are unclear, most athletes believe policy is against their use of alcohol and other drugs

Each downloadable PowerPoint includes links to ONLINE surveys (pre and post). Contact us for more information and reporting results.

Parents – experience the greatest gains in understanding about policy. Although details are unclear, parents have a general sense that alcohol and other drugs are not great for their teen athletes

Coaches – experience gains in both substance affect and policy; they have a reasonable notion about both, but their detailed understanding of each does increase statistically

Policy Tools

SFA has reviewed a lot of school policy regarding substances and athletics. Contact us to receive SFA’s Thoughts On Policy document that describes elements and approaches to consider when crafting new or evaluating existing policy. Along with these current practices, we hope to share reliable policy language and approaches when available…
